Who is Jonathan Flanagan?Man killed in horror train tragedy in Meath

Who was Jonathan Flanagan?

He is a 22 year old man from Bettystown in CoMeath.

Flanagan lives at Balbriggan , Co Dublin.

He came from a popular family that run post offices in Skerries and Bettystown.

Flanagan was a stunt supporter  of the Celtic Football club.

It is not clear if he was married, but he has been described as a young dad by people who were closed to him.

He along with a friend of his who is 30 was taking a short cut through the rail tracks.

They collided with a Dublin-Belfast bound train.

Jonathan Flanagan lived close to the scene and his death has shocked the residents of the area.

He was treated at the scene, but later died. His remains has been sent to Navan mortuary for a post mortem examination.

Tributes pour in for Jonathan Flanagan.

His family and friends were comforted following the unfortunate demise of the young dad.

Sharon Tolan, the local councillor said the entire community were “absolutely shocked.”

“Everyone is in shock,” Cllr Tolan added  “It is horrific for the family and for any family to lose someone so young so tragically. Losing a child is the most unnatural thing to happen, especially in such a tragic way,”

“My thoughts and the thoughts of the wider community are with his heartbroken family and friends at this time.”

The councillor also revealed that the train driver was also treated for shock.

A friend of Jonathan said : “Everyone is in shock. We can’t get our heads around what has happened. It’s just so, so tragic.”

Others also wrote on social media: “I can’t get my head around it all, he will be missed forever,” “Rest in peace Johnny, you will be sadly missed.”

It has been reported that train services were  suspended in the area for several hours following the incident.

It is an incident in which which gardaí are treating as an accident.

The rail company is also investigating the circumstances leading to the collision, indicating that it is “currently carrying out a preliminary investigation” into the incident.

 

The purpose of its investigations  according to them is “to improve railway safety by establishing insofar as possible the causes of an accident with a view to making safety recommendations for the avoidance of similar accidents in the future.”
