Who was Guitarist Garry Roberts?

The Irish musician, Garrick Roberts was the lead member of the 1970s popular band The Boomtown Rats.

The lead guitarist for The Boomtown Rats  was born on June 16,1950.

Garry Roberts along with one Johnnie Fingers better known as Moylett conceived the idea of the band.

The pair then recruited four others to join them.

The four other members of the band include Pete Briquette who was at the base, Gerry Cott as a guitarist, Simon Crowe as a drummer and singer Bob Geldof.

The Boomtown Rats was formed in 1976 and by 1986, it has been disbanded.

Guitarist Garry Robberts also had stinks with Simply Red, Flesh For Lulu as well as Orchestral Manoeuvre in the Dark.

He worked with them in his capacity as a their sound engineer and was with them in their UK and US tours.

The famous guitarist took a ten years brake and only  bounced back with a performance with fellow band member, Simon Crowe.

There are no information about his marriage life.

It is not clear if he was never married or was a gay. There are equally no information about his children

How did Guitarist Garry Roberts die?

He is said to have lived in Hereforshire specifically in Bromyard. The former guitarist and sound engineer died at the age of 72 years on 8th November,2022.

The cause of death of the 72 year old is unknown.

His band issued a statement on his death.

It reads:

“It is with a very heavy heart that the members of Boomtown Rats announce the death of Garry Roberts this morning, describing him as an ‘old friend and a great guitarist.’

“The remaining members of the band, Pete, Bob and Simon, Darren and Al extend their deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

“On a clear spring evening in 1975, in a pub in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, Garry became THE founding member of what turned out to be a great rock ‘n’ roll band, driven mainly by their sound – a storm of massive, deliberate noise emanating from his overloaded amplifiers, animating not only the rest of the group but also the audiences he played to around the world.

“For the fans, he was the legend – and he was. To us, he was Gazzer, the guy who encapsulated who The Rats are.

“We’ve known Garry since we were kids, so tonight we’re feeling oddly buoyant without him. Safe Travels Gaz. Thanks for everything, mate.”
