Who was Philip Rainey?

Philip Rainey was a 21 year old  Ruby player.

He used to play with Rugby club Omagh Accies RFC.

He was from Omagh in Co Tyrone.

Philip Rainey was a former pupil of Omagh Academy and was said to be popular while in school.

His school issued a statement on his passing.

“It is with deep sadness that we learn of the death of our former pupil Phillip Rainey. We remember Phillip as a happy and caring pupil who always had a large smile on his face.

“He was someone who always brought a sense of fun to any situation, and he will be greatly missed by our whole school community.”

Philip Rainey died on Wednesday, 8th September,2021.

He died through a single-car collision on the M1 motoway near Dungannon.

Philip Rainey was on his way to the hospital. His wife has just given birth and an excited Philip Rainey was going to see his new baby.

The sex of the baby that Philip Rainey never saw was a boy.

Philip Rainey was related to UUP Councillor Allan Rainey. He was Councillor Allan’s grandson.

Tributes pour out for Philip Rainey

Following the death UUP councillor Allan Rainey, grandson, Party leader Doug Beattie  has sent condolences to Allan and his family.“On behalf of the UUP I offer my sincere condolences to the Rainey family following Phillip’s tragic death.”He said.

Philip Rainey was a player at Omagh Accies RFC  club and the club also express their sympathy to the family.

The said Philip Rainey played his heart out  during games and that he will be greatly missed.

They added: “It is with deep regret we learn of the death of Phillip Rainey. Gone far too soon and an absolute gentleman. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Rainey & McKeown families and all his friends. May he rest in peace.”

Sgt Amanda McIvor  spoke about how everything happened leading to Philip’s death: “Police received a report at around 10.40am, that a white BMW 520 car had left the east-bound carriageway of the motor-way, near the Stangmore junction.“Emergency services attended but Phillip sadly died at the scene as a result of his injuries.”
