Details are emerging about the “godmother” role First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo played in the emergence of Edward Kwaku Asomani in the politics and governance of Ghana as he now heads National Security as Coordinator.
Reliable sources who are aggrieved about what they say is Asomani’s “premature and unmerited” rise in the National Security system revealed to MyNewsGh.com the role First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo played in the life of Asomani.
According to the sources, it was the first Lady who discovered the Oxford-trained Asomani during a United Kingdom visit and strongly recommended him to Gabby Asare Otchere Darko for a job.
The first lady was said to be impressed with him during her official visit. The source did not add anything else.
In 2018, Asomani was made to take a top post at partisan think tank Danquah Institute to ostensibly prepare him for bigger government roles later.
A year down the line, he was placed inside National Security and made Deputy National Security Coordinator; and a year on, now in 2022, he has been made the Substantive Coordinator.
Sources inside the National Security outfit consider Asomani’s appointment as a major setback for the agency given Asomani’s seeming lack of experience compared to the tall list of Coordinators who came before him.
It is not immediately clear what role Rebecca Akufo-Addo played in his appointment as Coordinator but sources suspect strongly that her word might have been involved backed by Akufo-Addo’s blood relative Gabby Otchere Darko, who has his hands all over government without a specific role.
As far back as October last year, after a series of undermining moves, Asomani was reportedly heard bragging that he was set to be named Substantive Coordinator by the end of the 2021 Security year.
Asomani reportedly undermined Major Amanfo, his then boss who is a retired General, and whose 5% experience Asomani cannot match with his UK Certificate.
Meanwhile, at the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) formally Bureau National Investigation (BNI), another alleged “poodle” of Gabby Otchere Darko has been put in charge without being actually qualified, insiders say. They say he is one of the least qualified persons by experience to ever head the NIB since it’s creation.
Another officer at the Bureau called Timothy Coleman who had served for over 32 years and was due to take the top post was sidelined for several month until his retirement.
