Who is Brittney Griner?

Brittney Griner will spent 9 years of her life rotting in a Russian jail starting from today. This is as result of drug related charges which she pleaded guilty and has been charged. But who is Brittney Griner.

Brittney Yevette Griner is an American Professional Basketball player. She plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was born on 18th October,1990 to Raymond and Sandra Griner.

Brittney Griner attended the  Nimitz High School in Houston. She played basketball in school and used to practice with the boys basketball team. Griner closely worked with Nimitz school coach who helped her to develop skills in the sport like dunking.

She achieved great feat at Nimitz leading them to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game when she was at her senior year.

Griner played her College basketball at the famous Baylor Lady Bears and is the only NCAA basketball player to “score 2000 points and block 500 shots”.

Griner who is a three All American was even equally named as the AP player of the year in 2012 and recognized as the Most outstanding player of the final tour.

Moreover, Brittney Griner was part of the United States women’s Olympic team in 2016, and fought with the team to victory  at the Rio Olympics.

The outstanding Griner is one of the few individuals to  receive an “Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship, a FIBA World Cup gold medal and a WNBA championship”.

Griner is the daughter of Raymond and Sandra Griner. Her  father, Raymond Griner is a former Harris County sheriff and Marine veteran. He served in the famous Vietnam war in 1968 and 1969.

Griner had indicated in an interview in 2013 that she had  previously come out to her parents in high school.

She added that her  father did not accept that decision and this forced her to live with an assistant coach for six weeks during her senior year.
