Who is Brittney Griner?

Brittney Yevette Griner is an American Professional Basketball player. She plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was born on 18th October,1990 to Raymond and Sandra Griner.

Brittney Griner attended the  Nimitz High School in Houston. She played basketball in school and used to practice with the boys basketball team. Griner closely worked with Nimitz school coach who helped her to develop skills in the sport like dunking.

She achieved great feat at Nimitz leading them to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game when she was at her senior year.

Griner played her College basketball at the famous Baylor Lady Bears and is the only NCAA basketball player to “score 2000 points and block 500 shots”.

Griner who is a three All American was even equally named as the AP player of the year in 2012 and recognized as the Most outstanding player of the final tour.

Moreover, Brittney Griner was part of the United States women’s Olympic team in 2016, and fought with the team to victory  at the Rio Olympics.

The outstanding Griner is one of the few individuals to  receive an “Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship, a FIBA World Cup gold medal and a WNBA championship”.

Griner openly admitted in 2013 that she is a lesbian. She stated her sexual orientation during an interview with  SI.com.

Griner further revealed on the same show that she suffer bullying as a child stating that “It’s hard. Just being picked on for being different. Just being bigger, my sexuality, everything.”

Why is Brittney Griner Jailed in Russia?

Griner was detained in Russia in  February 2022.

Her crime was that Russian Customs found  cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. The player has been entering Russia to play with the Russian Premeir League during the WNBA offseason.

Griner trial commenced on July 1, and she unfortunately pleaded guilty to the charges. She was on  August 4, sentenced to nine years in prison.
