There is an health emergency alert in the USA.  It is related to the outbreak of what has been described as  “drug-resistant bacterial eye infections”.

Experts are warning the general public as victims of this drug resistant bacteria infections has left with a trail of troubles.

TheSun reports that “three people have died and four had  their eyeballs removed after contracting the rare superbug“.

All victims say they used the EzriCare artificial eye drops.

This infection is said to be a strain of “Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria” and it was found in eye drops sold in the US.

It is linked to artificial tears which has been contaminated with a rare and what has been described as an “extremely drug resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria”.

This particular eye drops have been found in shops across the United States of America, the TheSun reported.

It must be noted that people with dry eyes use these artificial tears. Those who also wear contact lenses also used them.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is said to be linked to many infections, but is being reported in the US for the first time.

TheSun report say, it has been reported in 16 States since January of this year.

A report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDP) said that by March 14th, as many as 68 people have contracted this bacteria which has been described as rare.

It is out of this number that three of them have died, 8 went blind and four of them had their eyeballs removed through surgical operations.

The report said many as many as 10 brands were mentioned, but a majority of them said they used the

EzriCare Artificial Tears which is a “preservative-free over-the-counter product”.

The CDP are advising people to stop using the EzriCare Eye drop, the Delsam Pharma’s artificial tears as they two are said to have been manufactured by an INDIA company.

Global Pharma which is the manufacturer allegedly pulled the eye drops out of shells back in February.

All patients who have symptoms after using the EzriCare or Delsam Pharma’s artificial eye drops are encourage to get medical help immediatelty.

You should look out for the following symptoms as given out by the CDP.

They include:

  • Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Redness of the eye or eyelid
  • Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision

The sixteen States in the USA that patients were infected are the following.

New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin
